Desk study – Optimising the synergism between organic poultry production and whole farm rotations, including home grown protein sources Organic Eprints
Gordon, Sue.
Over the past fifty years, most poultry in the UK have been managed in specialist indoor systems and excluded as a significant enterprise from most other farm types. This meant that there was little information on how to integrate poultry into land-based systems such as organic production. This Defra project OF0163 aimed to assess methods of integrating organic poultry into crop rotations, taking into account the need to meet the birds’ nutritional and physiological requirements for health and performance, the recycling of nutrients between soil, plants and birds and practical limitations of the system. Objectives 1. To review the scientific literature available on home grown protein sources so as to identify their maximum inclusion rates in organic...

DESTINO DE RESÍDUOS DE INCUBATÓRIOS DA AVICULTURA NO ESTADO DE SÃO PAULO: ADEQUAÇÃO À LEGISLAÇÃO E POSSIBILIDADE DE USO ECONÔMICO AgEcon
Kobashigawa, Estela; Murarolli, Rafael Azevedo; Gameiro, Augusto Hauber.

Detection of fluoroquinolone resistance by mutation in gyrA gene of Campylobacter spp. isolates from broiler and laying (Gallus gallus domesticus) hens, from Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil Ciência Rural
Frasao,Beatriz da Silva; Medeiros,Valéria; Barbosa,André Victor; de Aguiar,Waldemir Silva; dos Santos,Felipe Faccini; Abreu,Dayse Lima da Costa; Clementino,Maysa Mandetta; de Aquino,Maria Helena Cosendey.
Poultry are considered to be the main reservoir of Campylobacter spp. bacteria, an important pathogen for humans. Many studies have reported a rapid selection of fluoroquinolone-resistant strains following the widespread use of these antimicrobials in poultry production and human medicine. The main mechanism of fluoroquinolone resistance in Campylobacter is a mutation in the Quinolone Resistance Determinant Region (QRDR) in the gyrA gene, which codes for the subunit of the enzyme DNA gyrase, the target for fluoroquinolone. The aim of this study was to investigate the mutation in QRDR in the gyrA gene of Campylobacter strains previously isolated from broiler carcasses and feces of laying hens. Thirty-eight strains of C. jejuni and 19 C. coli strains (n=57),...

Determination of thermal comfort zone for early-stage broilers REA
Cândido,Márcia G. L.; Tinôco,Ilda De F. F.; Pinto,Francisco de A. de C.; Santos,Nerilson T.; Roberti,Ricardo P..
ABSTRACT Environmental temperatures currently considered within comfort zone for broiler rearing may be misleading or even obsolete from actual values. Some factors such as animal genetics, nutrition and poultry management, mainly acclimatization to tropical and subtropical conditions, influence in determining the comfort zone for birds. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of five different thermal environments on animal welfare and rearing performance of broiler chickens, setting an ideal temperature range (comfort zone) for each of the first three weeks of poultry breeding. The chicks (375) were randomly placed into five climatic chambers set to distinct thermal conditions, being: one as recommended by the literature, another as stated by Cassuce...

Silva,Eliane Aparecida da; Albino,Luiz Fernando Teixeira; Rostagno,Horacio Santiago; Vieira,Rodolfo Alves; Ribeiro Junior,Valdir; Campos,Anastácia Maria de Araújo; Pereira,João Paulo Leles.
The objective of this study was to estimate the true digestibility coefficients of amino acids and digestible amino acid values of some poultry feedstuffs. The feedstuffs were: babassu meal, sunflower meal, corn gluten meal, babassu starchy meal, meat and bone meal, common beans, pearl millet and residues of cookies, pasta and bread. The precise feeding method of Sibbald was used with adult cecectomized Leghorn roosters distributed in a completely randomized design, consisting of ten treatments and six replications with a rooster in each. The treatments were represented by the feedstuffs evaluated. The roosters were kept in a period of fasting for 36 hours and then fed 30 grams of feed. Samples were collected during 56 hours. Simultaneously, six roosters...

Determining the Best Sectioning Method and Intestinal Segment for Morphometric Analysis in Broilers Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Gava,MS; Moraes,LB; Carvalho,D; Chitolina,GZ; Fallavena,LCB; Moraes,HLS; Herpich,J; Salle,CTP.
Brazilian poultry production is very efficient and demands maximum broiler performance. Therefore, digestive system pathologies have a relevant role. Considering it is difficult to obtain consistent information on intestinal morphometric analysis, this study aimed at establishing essential and clear criteria for the collection of intestinal segments for morphometric analysis. Fifteen 13-d-old broilers were sacrificed and three intestinal segments were collected per bird. Two 3-cm long sections were obtained from each of the intestinal segments. Samples were collected open or closed. The closed samples were transversely, hemicylindrically, or longitudinally sectioned. Samples were processed and stained with hematoxylin and eosin. The number of microscopic...

Development and evaluation of a novel subunit vaccine for Mycoplasma gallisepticum Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Moura,L.; Dohms,J.; Almeida,J.M.; Ferreira,P.S.; Biffi,C.P.; Backes,R.G..
Adhesion proteins from Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) encoded by cytadhesion genes mgc1 and mgc2 were cloned into plasmid vectors and transformed into E. coli. Seventeen groups of specific-pathogen free (SPF), birds at four weeks of age were used to inoculate these two proteins (MGC1 and MGC2) mixed into an oil emulsion creating a novel MG vaccine. Six different protein concentrations (50, 100, 200, 400, 800, and 1000µg/bird) were tested with two equal concentration doses at four and seven weeks of age. In addition, many control groups were needed such as bacterin, membrane, no vaccine or challenge, oil emulsion alone, and no vaccine but challenged. Three weeks following the second vaccination, 50% of the birds in each treatment group were challenged with...

Development of an agroforestry system for chicken production Organic Eprints
Philipps, Lois; Engel, Cindy; Wolfe, Martin.
This report was presented at the UK Organic Research 2002 Conference. Because conventional production of chickens has gone further than any other animal production system towards complete control of the animal’s brief lives, development of effective silvo-poultry systems seems particularly necessary for these essentially woodland birds. The objective is to develop a production system that closely matches the physiological and behavioural needs of the animals being reared. For the example of chickens, this means trying to mimic a woodland/forest-clearing environment. By providing a wide range of trees, shrubs and herbs, it should be possible to provide shelter, nutrition and medicinal benefits for the birds. At the same time, the system needs to fulfil...

Die Verhaltensentwicklung von Legehennen in verbesserten Aufzuchtsystemen Organic Eprints
Keppler, C.; Lange, K.; Fölsch, D.W..

Digital surface area assessment of broiler chickens REA
Yanagi Júnior,Tadayuki; Silva,Éberson; Braga Júnior,Roberto A.; Lopes,Marcos A.; Damasceno,Flávio A.; Silva,Gleice C. de A. E.
Surface area (SA) of poultry is an important parameter for heat and mass transfer calculations. Optical approaches, such as the moiré technique (MT), are non-destructive, result in accuracy and speed gains, and preserve the object integrity. The objective of this research was to develop and validate a new protocol for estimating the surface area (SA) of broiler chickens based on the MT. Sixty-six Ross breed broiler chickens (twenty-seven male, thirty-nine female, ages spanning all growth phases) were used in this study. The dimensions (length, width and height) and body mass of randomly selected broiler chickens were evaluated in the laboratory. Chickens were illuminated by a light source, and grids were projected onto the chickens to allow their shape to...

Do stocking rate and a simple run management practice influence the infection of laying hens with gastrointestinal helminths? Organic Eprints
Heckendorn, F.; Häring, D.A.; Amsler, Z.; Maurer, V..
The aim of this experiment conducted at four sites in Switzerland was to investigate the transmission and infectivity of the two main helminth parasite species of poultry (Ascaridia galli and Heterakis gallinarum) in outdoor runs with two different stocking rates. Additionally, the influence of a simplemanagement practice (mowing of run) on helminth transmission was studied. Three run types were created on each site: runs C served as control (stocking rate 10 m2/hen, no management), runs B corresponded to runs C but were managed (10 m2/hen, management). In runs A stocking rates were doubled compared to control runs (5 m2/hen, no management). During two subsequent layer flocks, a set of parasitological parameters (faecal egg counts (FECs), prevalence, worm...

Kaufmann, Falko; Nehrenhaus, U.; Andersson, R..
Debates on culling day-old male egg type chicks are constantly growing. The current study investigated the performance of two dual purpose breeds in a mobile production system under organic conditions. 509 Lohmann Dual (LD) and 505 Lohmann Dualexperimental (LDex) day old chicks were reared in two mobile stable barns as hatched. The cockerels were slaughtered on day 70, 80 and 85, the hens remained in their respective mobile barn for a prolonged laying period. Average bodyweight of cockerels at d 85 was 2650 g in LD and 2176 g in LDex. In 68 weeks of production, an average LD hen produced 289 eggs whereas it was 307 eggs in LDex. The performance of the dual purpose breeds is not comparable with those of specialized hybrids however it may still be sufficient...
